I help nursing students and nurses find the time for mindfulness meditation. So many of us have very busy lives and find ourselves running through the day to get everything done - right? Not only is that stressful, we get less done when we are so stressed. It impacts our health in a big way. I know I used to feel like I was super-mom by getting everything organized and done while working full-time as an RN and going to school full-time to get my Certified Nurse Midwife and Family Nurse Practitioner degrees. But, I did still find time to fit in a run now and then. I needed that stress relief and time to myself.
Now, I still use some exercise but mindfulness meditation is something I can do just about anywhere for just a few minutes at a time. Mindfulness meditation will change how your mind and body handle stress. Stress enacts the fight or flight mode in which adrenaline is pumped into your body. This system is valuable for times when there is a real threat and you need to escape, but a continual enactment of this system damages your body. By learning mindfulness meditation, your brain will learn to deal with stressful events without enacting the sympathetic nervous system. Your body will actually age more slowly!!
